From Miss D

The colours are very bright and although they match with the theme of reggae music, a magazine would not be mass-produced on coloured paper as it would be too complex and costly.

Front cover final desgn with colour

Here is my final front cover design with some colour used to show wht it will look like, i cannot put a background in becasue my background is one image taking up the whole page.

Title

I experimented with some different colour schemes

Title design ideas

This is my final Title that I will be using for my front cover

From Miss D

Well Done- some interesting ideas. now start trying to construct your products with what you've learnt- you have a chance to change/revise/adapt so just have a go!

Colour schemes and front cover ideas

Here i have looked at different colour schemes used by a variety of different reggae magazines. The main colour that stands out to me is green with yellow and orange showing up quite a lot. I think these colours are used to keep the tradition of the jamaican flag colours and keep raggea music related to jamaica. I have also noticed that dred locks are used alot on he front cover pictures which akes me think that maybe i should include a man with dred locks on my front cover .

Here i have looked at which different colour schemes I could use through out my magazine

Planning

For my title name i will be looking into relating it to my genre which is reggae. It will have to be upbeat, link with music and and have a catchy ring to it that will force the reader remember my magazine name.
The names i have come up with are....

Jammin - I thought of this name because when most people listen to reggae music they jam to the music and relax. The name jammin itself relates to reggae as it is a common word used with people who listen to that sort of music.

King Jam - Again i have used the word jam but this time added king in fornt of it. This gives a more royal approach and makes it sound as if it the magazine is the best at what it does.

Joint Magazine - I thought of this title because the word joint resembles canabis which is streotypically used by reggae artists such as bob marley. It aslo links with a joint as in a place where people go to hang out and possibly make reggae music.

Riddim - This title is origanally "rythm" pronounced in a jamacan accent which gives it a bit of a clever twist and makes the reader think it could be related to reggae. Also the word rythm is what most songs need to be successful and it is a commonly used music term

The name i have decided to use is Jammin because of its wide known relationship with reggae music and that I personally like it the best and feel that the reader will also like it.

Planning

Planning Front Cover

For my front cover my main attraction needs to be my title and main image that will lie as the background on the front cover. Firstly the title needs to catch the reader’s eye and let them know what my magazine is all about and the reggae genre of it. I have used my results from my questionnaire to determine the reggae colours of my title which are red, yellow and green. This should instantly let the reader know what sort of magazine they are picking up. The name of my magazine must resemble my reggae genre and link with that sort of theme. The image must also indicate with the reader the sort of magazine they are reading. The image I am going for is of a person with an African based background to give me the real reggae effect. They will be carrying some sort of instrument to let the reader know that they will obviously be reading a music magazine.

I will be using front cover design 3.

Contents

The contents must be clearly shown on the contents page and easily found by the reader. An image must be used to show the featured artist and a pull quote to let the reader know what will be shown throughout the magazine. It must reflect the style of the front cover to let the reggae style flow throughout the magazine. Therefore I must use the colours yellow, red and green to link with the cover.

I will use contents design 2.

Double Page Spread

Within the double page spread there must be a good interview with the artist and images so go with it. The images/image must be balanced with the amount of text to go with it. The columns must be placed in the correct way to fit the codes of conventions and the images must line up with the columns. The reggae style must also run through to the double page spread as well and carry on the theme.

I will use the double page spread design 3.

From Miss D

Avoid too much empty space here Alex- the layout is clear but needs to be filled a bit more or will look strange.

Product Placement

i have researched a magazine of a reggae genre and where it might be sold along with any other appropriate places to advertise my magazine. I found that most large supermarkets and small off licences sell a wide range of magazine. This is becasue it is very easy and convenient to buy a magazine which creates a much wider market the people that don't have access to the internet for musical information.I have also found that magzines can be bought from large music stores such as zavvi and HMV, this is a good environment to buy a magazine in because it puts people in a musical mood inevetably making them buy a music magazine. As music magazines are now more widely available the audience for them has grown dramatically and so can be advertised and sold almost anywhere.

Contents design 3

In this design I have included three largish images down the right hand side with the page number indicating where in the magazine these interesting images are. Again the contents itself is down the left hand side where it is most visible with this time the magazine name included at the top right.

Contents design 2

This ia my favourite contents page design because it is well balanced with an image and a pull quote to draw the reader into reading the rest of the magazine. Again the contents is on the left hand side again because it is the easiest place to locate it.

Contents design 1

This contents design page is taken from an NME magazine which has a large image on the right hand side to link with the text below it. The contents itself is located down the left hand side along with the contents title above it indicating that this is the contents page.

Double page spread design 4

I quite like this design because it is well broken down as it has a balanced amount of text and a large image to go with it.

Double page spread design 3

In this design there I have out three smallish images down the left hand side all showing different bands or different images of the same band. There is a bigger title and pull quote in this design which makes it stand out more from the text.

Double page spread design 2

In this design there is a big image centred in the middle of the two pages with text around it. There is a small title at the top and and also in the middle indicating what the article is about. Below the title is a pull quote to draw the reader into reading the main article.

Double page spread design 1

On this design there is one big image on the left hand side to indicate what the article within the double page spread might be about. there is also alot of text on the right hand side away from the image which may put people off. However i have included a pull quote a above the image to make the reader intrigued into what the main text is about.

Front cover design 5

This is the design from and old NME magazine which is a very successful and has alot of important information included on the front cover such as featured artists and captions down the right hand side of the cover. It also lets the reader know who the image is on on the front cover just encase they didn't .

Front cover design 4

This design has all the necessary information about the magazine with a few blank spaces mainly for the main image but for other stuff aswell which could easily be filled .
